“Listen to the terms of this covenant…Obey me, and do everything I command you, and you will be my people, and I will be your God.”
Jeremiah 11:2, 4
“If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him…”
God’s covenant with Israel required that they obey his voice and keep his commands/laws.
What does God’s covenant in Christ, require of us?
Many Christians believe it is all on God. He has atoned for our sins in Christ, sent us his Holy Spirit, and promised us eternal life with him.
What is our part of the covenant?
Jesus said it was to obey his teaching. Our faith is in Christ’s finished work on the cross for our salvation. This faith is then evident in our Spirit-empowered obedience to the life Jesus called us to live. We are called to love our enemies, to forgive freely, to give sacrificially, to serve humbly, to pray with faith, to resist sin and temptation, and to not worry – all because we love and know Jesus.
Are we living by the terms of our new covenant in Christ?
There is power in the Spirit, and more love and grace to follow and obey Jesus if we ask him for it.
“Lord Jesus, I desire this day to be faithful to your covenant through the power of your Holy Spirit, for your glory.”
