Resisting the Enemy’s Defiance

Today's Life Journal Bible reading1 Samuel 17; Psalm 9 ; Matthew 2

“…‘This day I defy the ranks of Israel! Give me a man and let us fight each other.’ On hearing the Philistine’s words, Saul and all the Israelites were dismayed and terrified…David asked the men standing near him, ‘What will be done for the man who kills this Philistine and removes this disgrace from Israel? Who is this uncircumcised Philistine that he should defy the armies of the living God?’” 1 Samuel 17:10-11, 26

The enemy defies God’s people because they carry his name and his glory. Goliath trusted in his own strength and the power of his gods (Dagon). This battle was not just against two armies, or even two men, it was between the deceiving spirits of the Philistines in their defiance against the living God, and the people of God. In every generation God is looking for those who will live with faith, hope, and love, for his glory. We wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities and powers. As God’s people, our fight is against the ways of this world, our sinful nature, and the devil. This three-headed foe defies the people of God and his Spirit within us.
Will we stand firm in our faith and resist the devil?

“Thank you Father God, that I bear your name and live with your authority. I choose again today to resist the temptations of the world, the flesh, and the devil.”
